Saratoga Hospital Celebrates Close of
$8M Campaign for Surgical and Intensive Care Services

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY, May 24, 2018—On Wednesday, May 23, 2018, Saratoga Hospital celebrated the closing of its capital Campaign for Surgical and Intensive Care Services with a brief formal program and self-guided tours of two of the 10 new operating rooms and the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). The campaign supported the largest capital project in the hospital’s history – its new Surgical Pavilion and the Marylou Whitney and Desmond DelGiacco, MD, Intensive Care Unit. In total, the five-year campaign raised $8 million toward the total project costs, which exceeded $32 million.

“None of this would have been possible without the generosity of the Saratoga community,” said Frank Messa, chair, Foundation Board of Trustees, Saratoga Hospital. “Every donation made an invaluable impact. More than 38 percent of the total number of gifts were less than $100. Whatever the capacity to give, it could never exceed the spirit of each and every kind heart who gave. You have our deepest thanks.”

The hospital also acknowledged with gratitude the generosity and support of leadership donors Gary and Nancy DiCresce; Stewart’s and the Dake family; the Riggi family; Michael and Linda Toohey; Saratoga Hospital Volunteer Guild; Frank and Colleen Messa; Jeffrey K. Pintuff; and Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson. The campaign began with a $4 million goal that was soon doubled to $8 million, due to the community’s motivated response to help secure support for burgeoning surgical and critical care volumes.

“Since 2000, Saratoga Hospital has had a 75 percent increase in surgeries,” said Angelo G. Calbone, president and CEO, Saratoga Hospital. “We’ve increased our number of surgeons on staff by 63 percent to meet the demand. Emergencies were bringing in four to six unscheduled surgeries a day. The prior operating suites were not designed for today’s robotic and other advanced technologies. There was no question we needed a greater surgical capacity, and we are overwhelmingly grateful the community so generously invested in helping us to achieve that goal.”

In posthumous recognition of two surgeons who epitomize the quality and care of Saratoga Hospital, Joseph W. Bell, MD, FACS, president, Saratoga Hospital Medical Group, dedicated Operating Room 1 to Dr. Arthur N. Isenberg in appreciation of his 43 years as a skilled surgeon and dedicated member and leader of the Saratoga Hospital community. OR1 is primarily used for minimally invasive general surgery.

William W. O’Connor, MD, OrthoNY, presented the posthumous re-dedication of Operating Room 7 to orthopedic surgeon Dr. Edward “Ted” Gallagher, a decorated U.S. Army veteran who served in leadership positions in Saratoga Hospital’s Department of Surgery. The room had been converted to other uses during the construction and redesign before its upgrade into a new OR that is primarily used for orthopedic surgeries.
