Plastic Surgeon Trained in Microsurgery Joins Saratoga Hospital Medical Team
Specialized expertise of Albany Med’s Dr. Casian Monaco benefits cancer patients
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY, December 11, 2018—Dr. Casian Monaco, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with fellowship training in microsurgery, is now a member of the Saratoga Hospital medical team. He is one of a growing group of physicians who provide highly specialized care at Saratoga Hospital because of its affiliation with Albany Med.
A native of Saratoga Springs, Dr. Monaco joined Albany Med this fall. At Saratoga Hospital, he works primarily with Dr. Patricia Rae Kennedy, breast surgeon and clinical director of the hospital’s Center for Breast Care, to meet the needs of breast cancer patients.
The addition of Dr. Monaco enables Saratoga Hospital to offer advanced microsurgical options for breast reconstruction and relief from lymphedema, a common side effect of cancer treatment. Dr. Monaco also is skilled in facial reconstruction, head and neck reconstruction, and cosmetic plastic surgery.
“Very few hospitals of our size can offer patients this type of expertise,” said Dr. Richard Falivena, vice president and chief medical and physician integration officer at Saratoga Hospital. “It was one of the main reasons we affiliated with Albany Med—to give our community access to services that typically are available only at academic health sciences centers.”
Saratoga Hospital and Albany Med affiliated in January 2017. Since then, Saratoga Hospital has added affiliate providers from Albany Med to bring specialty care in cardiac electrophysiology, microvascular surgery, thoracic surgery and endocrine surgery to Saratoga County.
Dr. Monaco earned his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine in New York City and completed residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center. He went on to complete fellowship training in microvascular surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in Los Angeles.
Dr. Monaco sees patients at Saratoga Hospital Center for Breast Care on the hospital’s Wilton campus and on the main campus of Albany Med. To make an appointment at Saratoga Hospital Center for Breast Care, call 518-580-2170. For more information, go to www.saratogahospital.org.
