Saratoga Hospital Offering Free Hernia Screenings

Evening Event to Include da Vinci Surgical Robot Demonstration

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY, February 21,  2018—Saratoga Hospital is offering free inguinal and ventral hernia screenings on Tuesday evening, March 6, along with a presentation about recognizing the signs and what to do should a hernia occur. There are limited screenings available; registration is required.

For those considering hernia surgery, the presentation will include a free demonstration of the da Vinci Xi robot surgical device. Attendees will have an opportunity to “test-drive” the da Vinci robot.

Members of the Saratoga Hospital Medical Group –General Surgery will be doing the screenings, and will be offering a brief presentation on hernia repair and treatment options.

This event is ideal for men and women who may have hernia symptoms, such as an obvious swelling beneath the skin of the abdomen or groin or discomfort in those areas when lifting or bending over. A hernia occurs when part of an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak section of muscle. Although not dangerous, it cannot improve on its own and can lead to serious complications.

Hernia repair is among the most common general surgery procedures. The da Vinci surgical system is a state-of-the-art device that enables surgeons to manipulate robotic arms and wrists with extraordinary precision and dexterity. In addition, its 3-D magnification and visualization system provides unparalleled views of structures inside the body. This highly advanced robotics technology is used to perform minimally-invasive surgeries via tiny incisions. Benefits may include less pain, less blood loss, and less scarring, and shorter recovery times. Robotic-assisted surgery is currently being used for urologic, gynecologic, general and thoracic surgeries.

The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6 in the reception area of Same Day Surgery, located in the Emergency Department wing of the Hospital. There is limited seating, so registration is required for the event. Screenings will immediately follow, continuing until 8 p.m. on a first come, first served basis.

Comfortable clothes are recommended for the screenings. Each screening takes about 10 minutes and will be performed by a physician. The results will be shared within a week to 10 days via letter with the participant and, upon proper consent, with the participant’s primary care provider.
