Saratoga Hospital – an affiliate of Albany Med
Since January 2017, Saratoga Hospital has been an affiliate of Albany Med—a collaboration that provides significant benefits for the hospitals and the communities we serve.
Joining Columbia Memorial Health as an affiliate, our decision to collaborate reflects our certainty that partnership is good medicine, especially in today’s challenging healthcare environment.
What we are doing
Albany Med, Columbia Memorial Health, and Saratoga Hospital are transforming the way healthcare is delivered in Northeastern New York by creating the region’s only integrated, locally governed health system. We are taking three hospitals, with proud traditions of serving their communities for over a century, and building a strong, diverse system that will sustain those traditions for generations to come.
Best of both worlds
Our affiliation recognizes and capitalizes on the strengths of each hospital, including its extraordinary role in its home community. At the same time, the affiliation makes Albany Med’s advanced care readily available to patients from the Mid-Hudson Region to the North Country. In essence, patients get the best of both worlds: community-based care from physicians they know and trust, plus easy access to highly specialized services via the region’s only academic health sciences center.
Why this matters
In today’s healthcare environment, it simply doesn’t make sense—medically or economically—for hospitals to try to go it alone. As partners, we can draw on each other’s expertise to benefit everyone involved: our patients, employees, and individual hospitals; our communities; and the region as a whole.
Identify and implement best practices
As part of a system, each affiliate can more easily recruit and retain talented providers and other hospital staff. We can better identify and implement best practices. And we can streamline and standardize systems to hold the line on costs and improve coordination of care.
Already, working as a team, we’ve identified millions of dollars in savings across the system. Every dollar we save through efficiencies is another dollar we can invest in services, technology and facilities, and talent.
How we work together
Our three organizations are partnering to achieve the mutual goal of improving healthcare throughout Northeastern New York. Collaboration starts at the top and extends throughout the system. Executives from each institution work regularly together, including Columbia Memorial Health and Saratoga Hospital board members serving on the Albany Med Board, and Albany Med executives represented on each affiliate’s board. Staff members from key areas—such as clinical care, information technology, and supply chain—meet regularly to identify opportunities to work together for the good of the system.
Driven by our common commitment to our patients
Early meetings focused on getting to know one another and each other’s organizations. Now, we routinely share policies and practices as well as our experiences with different services, vendors, and products. Increasingly, our physicians are participating in professional learning opportunities and presenting at each other’s educational programs. The more we get to know each other, the more we recognize what each affiliate brings to the table—and the more comfortable we are in taking advantage of the flexibility of our governance structure.
Some collaborative efforts involve all three affiliates, and others make sense for two of the three partners. In some cases, we each take our own approach. Always, we are driven by our common commitment to our patients and the region we serve.
