Anesthesiology

A highly skilled anesthesia team

The anesthesiology team at Saratoga Hospital is dedicated to keeping you safe and comfortable during and after surgery and other medical procedures. We know that every patient is different, so we work with you to choose the best anesthesia option for your medical and personal situation.

If you’re having scheduled, or elective, surgery, you will meet with a member of the anesthesia team ahead of time to discuss your procedure, your medical history, and your anesthesia options.

To meet the needs of patients who require emergency surgery, an attending anesthesiologist is on call 24/7, 365 days a year.

Our anesthesia team is skilled in administering all types of anesthesia:

  • Local anesthesia, which prevents pain in a small area and is used for procedures such as cataract surgery and dental surgery. You remain awake and alert.
  • Regional anesthesia, which is used to numb a larger part of the body, such as an arm or leg or below the waist. Examples include spinal blocks and epidurals. Depending on the surgical procedure—and what you prefer—you may remain awake or you may be given a sedative to help you relax or even fall asleep.
  • General anesthesia, which puts you to sleep, and is used for major, more complicated surgeries.

Your anesthesia doctor or nurse will discuss these options with you as part of the preparation for your surgery. If you have any questions or concerns, be sure to discuss them.
